Submitted on 23 march in Arezzo on “Legambiente treno verde” LIFE project SEMENte parTEcipata
Navdanya International participated in the stop of Legambiente Treno Verde (Green Train) in Arezzo in a press conference and an initiative aimed at schools, which was also attended by farmers keepers to exchange seeds. The Treno Verde is an exhibition space and meeting dedicated to agriculture quality of the Italian territories, to healthy lifestyles and sustainable advances that make possible a new economy built around the real needs of people, 15 stop throughout the peninsula, destination Expo 2015. Navdanya International, prof. Benedettelli and Prof. Vazzana attended the meeting “Ancient seeds and biodiversity” which was presented in detail the project LiFe Semente Partecipata.
"The selection of seed," says Maria Grazia Mammuccini, vice president of Navdanya International " will be held in conjunction with farmers who will then maintain and reproduce themselves the seeds, thus becoming active custodians of biodiversity. These innovations have a positive impact on farmers' income, given that production costs will decrease and increased the value of the products obtained from a local integrated supply chain"
"The participatory evolutionary breeding" says Prof. Stephen Benedettelli, scientific coordinator of the project "follows in small paths that normally occur in nature in the evolution of species and is only respecting the laws of nature that can be a substantial energy saving. L'use of seed adapted to the growing environment is a way to meet the production needs without compromising the environmental balance."
